Cardigan celebrated International Women’s Day in a truly historic manner this year as two female councillors were voted to serve the town as its next mayor and deputy mayor.
County councillor Sian Maehrlein will take over the reins from current mayor Cllr Trystan Phillips at the annual mayor making ceremony which takes place in The Guildhall on May 9, while the deputy role will be resumed by Barclays Bank employee, Cllr Olwen Davies.
This is only the third time in Cardigan’s history that the town has been served by both a female mayor and a female deputy at the same time
“We’re absolutely delighted to be elected to these roles and will strive to do our very best for our town and community,” commented Cllr Maehrlein.
“Our aim is to help anybody and everybody. Together with my husband Dave, who will be my consort, I hope I can serve the town just as well as all our previous mayors have done over the past years.”
The last 12 months have been particularly challenging for Cllr Maehrlein following the tragic death of her daughter, Kelly.
“Yes, it’s been difficult, as the whole time I was canvassing last April for a seat on Ceredigion County Council Kelly was so ill and there were many times when I thought about giving it all up. But there’s no doubt that Kelly has inspired me all the way, and this makes being able to take over take over as mayor a very special time.”
Sian has served as a town councillor since 2017 and in 2022 was elected to represent Cardigan’s Mwldan Ward as a Liberal Democrat councillor on Ceredigion County Council.
