A COUNCILLOR in Bridgend county borough has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident that took place in a village. However, the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales has stated that no regulatory action can be taken against Independent councillor Darren Brown due to the absence of a complaint from anyone, including the council to which he belongs.
The incident unfolded when police officers responded to a report of a serious assault in Tairfelin, Wildmill, at 10.30pm on Monday, July 10.
A woman was subsequently taken to the hospital, while Cllr Brown was charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody.
Detective Inspector Owain Morrison expressed gratitude to the community in Wildmill for their support during the investigation. He also encouraged individuals with any information pertaining to the incident to step forward, quoting reference number 2300229643.
Emphasizing the preliminary nature of the investigation, DI Morrison stated, “The investigation is in its early stages to establish the circumstances around the incident, and we would encourage the community not to speculate.” Consequently, a substantial police presence is expected to remain at the location for an extended period while inquiries are conducted. Additionally, the neighborhood policing team will be undertaking reassurance patrols.

Cllr Brown, aged 34, is among the 17 Independent members of Bridgend Town Council. The council includes one Welsh Labour member and one vacant position. Cllr Brown was co-opted onto the council a year ago by existing Independent members.
Inquiring about the council’s response to the serious offense with which Cllr Brown has been charged, we approached the council’s clerk, Leanne Edwards. However, Mrs Edwards declined to comment.
Responding to the matter, a spokesperson for the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales stated, “We have not received a complaint regarding Darren Brown of Bridgend Town Council. Our legislation does not permit us to intervene unless a complaint is lodged.”
