The proposal to establish a drug addiction treatment center in close proximity to a playground has been rejected.
The Hywel Dda health board had sought to relocate the Dyfed Drugs and Alcohol Service to North Dock in Llanelli, but Carmarthenshire Council has declined the plans. The decision was met with applause from the audience in the gallery.
Council officer John Thomas indicated that the applicant might consider filing an appeal.
Previously, over 200 individuals had raised objections to the proposal, expressing concerns that the presence of the center could pose safety risks for children in the area.
The planning report from the council noted that the application had the backing of the police, clarified that the service would primarily operate on an appointment-only basis, and mentioned the installation of CCTV around the facility.
The Hywel Dda health board had emphasised that the center aimed to contribute to improved health outcomes for the residents of Llanelli.
