ANGLESEY’S Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team and the Holy Island Landscape Partnership is to host an open day aimed at promoting volunteering opportunities across Anglesey.

The free family friendly event will include a variety of activities which will provide an opportunity to discover more of Anglesey and it’s rich past.

The action-packed day, held at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park, will take place Saturday, 21st of October, between 9:30am and 4:00pm.

Activities on offer include:

  • Dry Stone Walling: Learn this traditional craft with professional waller, Ioan Doyle whilst also helping the team to maintain the patchwork of field boundaries within the Breakwater Park.
  • Gorse clearance using hand tools: By removing gorse, you will help create a mosaic habitat for the beautiful and rare silver studded blue butterfly. In this session you we will also cover the safe use and care of hand tools such as bows and loppers as well as enjoying marshmallows on an open fire.
  • Bracken Scything: Learn the traditional skill of scything as you’ll help to remove bracken as part of our heathland and meadow restoration projects.
  • Knife Sharpening Workshop: This session will cover blade assessment, remedial repairs, honing and tool care followed by an introduction to whittling to hone your skills; covering the safe and efficient use of a small knife and associated hand grips and cutting methods.

Leisure, Tourism and Maritime Portfolio Holder, Councillor Neville Evans said:

“The AONB on Anglesey is home to approximately 7000 people who live in creative and dynamic communities. These communities are also popular holiday destinations for those who wish to relax on the island.”

He added, “It’s important we engage with residents and visitors to encourage the AONB’s preservation as well as promoting traditional nature-based activities.”

Free lunch and hot drinks will be available to registered volunteers, courtesy of Caffi’r Breakwater. The event also includes free parking and all ability access.

AONB Community Warden, Owen Davies explained, “By offering unique activities and experiences, we can help promote the AONB and the beauty that Anglesey has to offer. By giving people the opportunity to participate in traditional countryside activities we are also helping to maintain the history of the Island by passing on some historic techniques residents of old would have used.”
