Generations meet to celebrate new Dementia Hub

PEOPLE of all ages came together at an event to celebrate the launch of a new weekly Dementia Hub in Amlwch recently.

Pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Amlwch joined older members of the community and carers at an open afternoon, hosted by Môn Actif and Age-Friendly Anglesey at the Memorial Hall.

The event coincided with Global Intergenerational Week, which encourages different age groups to come together to work on local projects in meaningful ways.

Those attending were given an opportunity to experience some of the Dementia Hub’s activities, including:

  • Crafts
  • Curling
  • Gentle Chair-based Exercises

The new hub, run by Dementia Actif Môn, will seek to support people living with Dementia as well as their carers. Participants can chat and socialise with one another over a cuppa.

Organisations including North Wales Police, Carers Trust, Carers Outreach Service, Age Cymru Gwynedd a Môn and Tai Môn Housing were also present and provided information stalls offering support and insight into the services available.

Friendly Age Champion, Councillor Gwilym Jones, said “We’re committed to creating a dementia-friendly Anglesey, where there are no barriers for people living with dementia, their carers and their families.”

“The new Dementia Hub in Amlwch will help by raising awareness about the information and support available out in the community, be it through the County Council or our partners. It was also great to see a variety of ages connecting with each other at the open day.”

Yvonne Owen, a local resident and member of the Anglesey Older People’s Council, COPA, and Friends of Amlwch Memorial Hall said, “It was a wonderful afternoon. I think that both adults and children benefited a lot from it, and such a warm and inclusive atmosphere.”

The Amlwch Dementia Hub is held every Monday, from 1-3pm (except Bank Holidays) at Amlwch Memorial Hall.
