WORK is ongoing to extend an agreement to continue running services at Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre which runs out in August.
In May Merthyr Tydfil Council entered into an agreement with Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust to temporarily occupy and run services at Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre while work continues to find a permanent resolution. This agreement expires on August 1, 2024.
The council said it continues to attempt to work with the trust and its insolvency practitioner to extend that arrangement so services can continue operating at the centre.
The council said it has engaged with local MP Gerald Jones and local MS Dawn Bowden to get advice on a way forward with the Charity Commission to secure the long-term future of the centre.
Council leader Geraint Thomas said: “The council has, and will continue to, do everything in its power to maintain service provision at the centre. However we need the cooperation of the trustees and insolvency practitioner to allow us to do this at this time.”
The council said it will continue to provide updates as it has them.
There has previously been widespread community concern over the future of the building with councillors calling on the trust to engage with the council in recent months to secure the future of the building, which played a significant role in the community following the Aberfan disaster.
