University of Wales Trinity Saint David Students compete in the Formula Student Sim Racing Finals at Williams F1

STUDENTS from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) geared up to compete in the highly anticipated Formula Student Racing Finals on Tuesday 16th July, that took place at the iconic Williams F1 Headquarters. This event offered a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their virtual racing skills and engineering acumen in a simulated environment, showing casing their talents.

The UWTSD Swansea team, comprising of and led by passionate and skilled students, have competed in 6 rounds during the 2024 Championship, which has helped them meticulously prepare for the final round of the Championship. The Formula Student Sim Racing Final challenges participants to apply their technical knowledge and driving skills in a state-of-the-art racing simulator, replicating the experience of real-world motorsport.

Dr Kerry Tudor, Assistant Academic Director for Engineering at UWTSD said: “Our students’ involvement in the Formula Student Sim Racing Final highlights their dedication to engineering and simulations technologies. This competition provides them with a platform to excel in a cutting-edge field and gain valuable experience that will benefit their future careers.

“The UWTSD team exemplifies the initiative and collaborative spirit of its members, who have managed every aspect of their participation in the Formula Student Sim Racing Championship, helping them gain key skills for employment.”

The competition is renowned for fostering innovation, teamwork and simulation skills among aspiring engineers. By participating, UWTSD students have competed against top university from around the world. The event also underscores the growing importance of simulation and digital technologies in the future of motorsport and engineering.

In addition to displaying their racing skills, the student led team have had to learn to work together, make strategic decisions and organisational skills to enable them to lead and run the team themselves.

Team Leader, James Greenhill-Upward, current 2nd year on the BEng Motorsport Engineering programme, said: “The competition has helped me develop a better understanding of team management, performance engineering and strategy engineering.

“The final was excellent to compete against universities from around the world. We put ourselves out there and proved what we are capable of. The Williams F1 Headquarters facility was amazing and the staff were fantastic.”

The Engineering Academic Discipline at UWTSD offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes covering subjects such as Motorsport, Automotive and Motorcycle Engineering. The team’s participation underscores UWTSD’s commitment to providing excellent educational opportunities and fostering innovation in engineering and technology.
