PLANS for a new skate park near Merthyr Tydfil Leisure centre have now officially been submitted.
The council has made an application for the new skate park which would be located right next to the main entrance to the leisure centre.
The skate park is part of the council’s redevelopment plan for the town over the next 15 years and will consist of a new bespoke concrete skate surface, slopes and features and the remainder of the site will include a path, seating areas and trees.
A design and access statement submitted with the application said the existing skate park adjacent to the proposed site will not be included as part of this project as due to safety issues the council have had to remove the equipment before this application was made.
It said: “The existing skate park suffered from regular anti-social behaviour, disturbing people using the pedestrian thoroughfare adjacent and the skate-park.
“The relatively remote location from more public areas discourages wider family use. The new location and design will change this to a more open and accessible facility.”
It said that the aim is to attract people to the area, whilst discouraging anti-social behaviour.
The statement said that the proposed site is directly adjacent the main entrance of the leisure centre, benefiting from being less remote from public view and security over-site.
It said: “The development is to provide a vibrant environment with new seating and green areas suitable for families to gather around while children and young people are using the skate park.”
It said that the materials, planting and surfaces have been selected to be sympathetic with the existing context.
