DRAMA unfolded at Traeth Bychan, a beach on Anglesey, when a pick-up truck was claimed by the incoming tide, prompting an emergency response. The incident occurred on Saturday morning (5th October) when the vehicle became “stuck” on the expansive sandy beach, located about a mile south of Moelfre.
The owner of the white pick-up waded into chest-deep water in an attempt to retrieve his vehicle, raising concerns for his safety and resulting in a call to local rescue teams. The RNLI and Coastguard units were alerted around 10am and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, rescue teams quickly established that no one else was inside the stranded vehicle, and the owner had already made it back to shore. Although he was “cold and wet,” he was otherwise unharmed.
By this time, the pick-up had been engulfed by the tide, leaving it “beyond salvage,” according to RNLI Moelfre. However, there was a silver lining: the owner’s boat and trailer, which had been uncoupled before the flooding, were safely secured on the beach.
In spite of the vehicle’s predicament, efforts were made to recover it. Coastguard members devised a plan while awaiting the arrival of a tractor on the scene. Once it arrived, the team cleared the beach area and attached a tow rope to the pick-up. Unfortunately, the attempt to pull the vehicle free was unsuccessful, as the tow rope snapped, leaving the truck fully submerged by the tide.
A spokesperson for the Coastguard commented: “Once a tractor arrived on scene, team members cleared the beach area whilst a tow rope was attached to the vehicle and an attempt was made to recover the stricken vehicle. Unfortunately, the tow rope snapped, leaving the vehicle stuck and eventually fully submerged.”
Despite the unfortunate outcome for the pick-up truck, the owner was left unharmed and managed to secure his other belongings.
