NEW pictures of a former hostel and bar in Cardiff show work to bring it back to life is still progressing.

It was announced in December, 2023, that the once popular Nos Da hostel in Riverside would be re-opened as a cafe and bar called On the River.

Since then, work has been taking place to transform the building’s interior and exterior.

Pictures taken recently show that the venue has been re-decorated, with ‘On the River’ painted on the front and side, and a new structure has been attached to the rear.

Work is also taking place to, what looks like, clear the outdoor seating area of the former hostel.

Speaking in 2023, the new owners of the building, which has been lying empty for years, said the redeveloped venue would also include accommodation and a garden.

They also said it would become a “culinary destination” for locals and visitors.

The former hostel is located in Despenser Street and what used to be the outdoor seating area was next to the Taff Trail and looked out onto the River Taff.

After Nos Da closed its doors for good, this area was taken advantage of by fly-tippers and affected by anti-social behaviour issues.

Cardiff Council workers were sent over to clean up the outdoor space of the property in November, 2022, after it became littered with drug paraphernalia and other rubbish.

The building was eventually sold in August, 2023, to MC2MB Ltd, a joint venture between Actoris, Michel Cartis and Matt Bryant.

The company said in December, 2023, that it expected the redevelopment project to be completed by spring, 2024.

At the time, Director of MC2MB, Matt Bryant, said: “Cardiff needs quality accommodation on the River, and On the River will be a unique mix of sleeping quarters and leisure spaces.

“It’s not just a revamp; it’s breathing new life into a space that’ll become a vibrant hub connecting the community with modern comforts while respecting the rich history.”

On top of the work being done to the building itself, plans include more than 40 bike racks to replace the car park to the rear.

The developers have been contacted for an expected opening date.
