CARDIFF WALES AIRPORT celebrated the arrival of PLAY Airlines, a low-cost carrier offering direct flights between Wales and Iceland, marking the first connection of its kind. The inaugural flight, which departed on October 11, 2024, was given a ceremonial water salute by Cardiff Airport firefighters and featured treats like chocolate liquorice and Aurora Borealis-themed cake for passengers. The fully-booked flight carried 174 passengers and coincided with the Wales football team’s match in Iceland.

PLAY Airlines will offer twice-weekly flights from Cardiff to Reykjavík, providing a gateway for Welsh travellers to explore Iceland’s unique landscapes. Additionally, PLAY is promoting Iceland as a stopover destination for those heading to North America, allowing passengers to experience two countries in one trip.
Lee Smith, Head of Business Development at Cardiff Wales Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the new service, highlighting the benefits for both Welsh tourism and travellers. He stated: “PLAY’s Icelandic hub in Reykjavík allows customers to enjoy stopovers in Iceland before continuing on to major North American cities.”
This move is also expected to boost tourism to Wales, encouraging Icelandic visitors to experience the region’s renowned beaches, castles, and natural beauty. PLAY Airlines’ flights will be operated by the eco-friendly Airbus A320neo, which boasts a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to older models.
Passengers can book flights and stopovers through the airline’s website at www.flyplay.com.
