Barry sex offender jailed for 24 years

A MAN from Barry has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for a string of serious child sex offences.

Mark Jones, aged 65, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday (Apr 4), where he was found guilty of multiple offences, including rape and the sexual abuse of children under the age of 13.

The charges included:

  • Rape
  • Three counts of raping a child under 13
  • Six counts of sexual assault
  • Nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child
  • Four counts of assault by penetration of a child under 13
  • Assault by penetration
  • Two counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
  • Two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity

Jones was sentenced to 24 years in custody, with a one-year extended licence period. The court also imposed a restraining order to protect all four of his victims.

Following sentencing, Detective Constable Natalie Revers said:
“Mark Jones is a sexual predator who preyed on the vulnerability of multiple victims, so we are pleased with the court outcome following his offences.
“Despite the ages of the victims, Jones’ actions have had a profound effect on them. We hope that this sentence helps the victims and their families move forward.”
