Cardo partners with Cardiff Commitment to deliver career session at local primary school

CARDO, in partnership with Cardiff Commitment, has delivered a career session to Year Six students at Pentrebane Primary School, exploring a wide range of roles in construction – from executive positions to skilled trades like quantity surveying and carpentry.

A key theme throughout the presentation was the importance of career progression and adaptability, encouraging students to embrace change and explore different pathways.

To illustrate this, the session highlighted the journey of Liam Bevan, CEO of Cardo, who initially aspired to be a professional footballer but later pursued a carpentry apprenticeship before ultimately going on to lead the organisation.

At the start of the session, a straw poll revealed that only one student – who had family members in construction – had previously considered a career in the field. By the end of the session, 10 out of the 16 students expressed interest, with an even split between male and female students.

The session concluded with a group activity to construct a pool noodle den with students assigned roles as designers, builders, and quality checkers – all overseen and led by a female pupil as ‘the boss’.

Students shared their thoughts on the experience, with one pupil saying, “My favourite part was when we were building and everybody worked together”, and another adding, “My favourite part was when I learnt we can swap jobs and do what we want with our mindset”.

Overall, 75% of students felt they learned something new about the industry and 93% of pupils selected ‘yes’ or ‘maybe’ when asked if Cardo would be an interesting company to work for when they grow up.

Abbie Marks, Cardiff Commitment Project Manager said: “We were delighted to have Cardo take part in ‘Open Your Eyes Week: Spring Experiences’, inspiring Cardiff’s young people through hands-on learning. Their engaging workshop gave Year Six pupils a real insight into the world of construction, sparking curiosity and teamwork.

“The positive feedback from both pupils and teacher highlight the impact of meaningful employer engagement. We’re grateful to Cardo for their ongoing support in working together to be a city that inspires its children and young people towards a better future.”

Rhydian James, Managing Director of Cardo (Wales and West), said: “The Cardo team had a fantastic session at Pentrebane Primary School with Cardiff Commitment, giving students insight into the wide range of careers in construction and is a great example of our commitment to challenging perceptions.
