A MAJOR new community sports hub in Pontllanfraith is nearing completion, with the state-of-the-art facility expected to open its doors this summer.
Senior councillors visited the site this week and said they were impressed with the progress of the £14 million development, known as Y Cwmpawd.
The scheme includes a new Centre for Vulnerable Learners alongside a four-court multi-purpose sports hall, modern changing facilities, and a small 3G pitch that will be available for community use outside of school hours.
The development forms part of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s ambitious Place Shaping programme, which is delivering major strategic investment across the region in schools, leisure facilities, housing, and infrastructure.
Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said: “It was great to visit the site and see first-hand how this fantastic new facility is taking shape.
“We’ve made significant investments in sport and leisure in recent years – including the Y Cwmpawd site – and we’ve got more planned. These developments are delivering modern, fit-for-purpose sports facilities across the county borough, in line with our Sport and Active Recreation Strategy.”
Once the new 3G pitch at Y Cwmpawd opens this summer, the current 3G pitch adjacent to Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre will be decommissioned.
The council has confirmed it will announce the official opening date in the coming weeks.
