Swansea opticians raise £500 for local firefighters

EMPLOYEES at Specsavers Swansea and Mumbles have raised £500 for Fire Fighters Charity, following a month-long fundraising event held across the stores.

Fire Fighters Charity provides dedicated clinical care and wellbeing support to members of the UK’s fire services and their families, helping them manage physical, emotional and social challenges, as well as long-term conditions, injuries and life after service.

With an initial fundraising goal of £150, the Specsavers team organised a raffle featuring prizes such as a pair of designer frames and a £50 gift voucher donated by a local restaurant. Staff also sold goody bags and collected donations online.

Marking the end of the fundraiser, the Specsavers team attended the Welsh Firefighter Challenge – an event where local fire stations go head-to-head in a series of physical and mental challenges. Held at Dylan Thomas Square on Saturday 7 June, the team provided free glasses cleaning, minor repairs and eye health advice to attendees.

Chris Jones, retail director at Specsavers Swansea, says: ‘We’re proud to support Fire Fighters Charity and want to thank everyone who took part or donated. This was a real team effort, and we’re grateful for the backing of our local community.

‘Supporting causes that matter to our customers and colleagues is an important part of what we do and we’re committed to continuing our fundraising efforts throughout the year.’

Claire McMinn, regional fundraiser at Fire Fighters Charity, says: ‘We’re incredibly grateful to Specsavers Swansea and Mumbles for their fundraising efforts and wholeheartedly thank them for choosing to support us.

‘The funds raised will go directly towards supporting our work with the fire services community – providing lifelong care to firefighters, their fire service colleagues and their families, ensuring they always have somewhere to turn.’

For those unable to attend but wishing to support the cause, donations can still be made here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/specsavers-swansea-firefighter.
