GARETH DAVIES, Vale of Clwyd MS, has paid tribute to the pupils of Ysgol Frongoch in Denbigh following his visit to the school for the annual Thomas Maldwyn Pryce Inspirational Pupil of the Year Awards. Held on 11th June, the event celebrated children who demonstrate persistence, resilience, and determination – the very qualities that defined Tom Pryce and propelled him to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Named in honour of the late Welsh Formula 1 driver Tom Pryce, known locally as “Maldwyn”, the awards were first established three years ago through a partnership between the school, local advocate Dave Jones, and figures from the motorsport community.
This year, two pupils received the award, and two others were commended for their effort, enthusiasm, and commitment to always striving to do their best.
The awards day was a true celebration of character and community spirit. Pupils were treated to a showcase of cars, with 11 vehicles, including a McLaren amongst other vintage, performance, and racing cars which were displayed on the school playground, bringing both excitement and a touch of motor racing magic to Denbigh.

Historically, the school has used the awards to invite visitors from a variety of industries to come to the school and talk about what they can achieve with the right attitude and mindset. Visitors included nurses, police officers, midwives, and prison governors, with the pupils captivated by the personal stories shared.
The award continues to develop thanks to the efforts of the school and community members like Dave Jones, and headteacher Dylan Jones, who have campaigned tirelessly to keep the legacy of Tom Pryce alive and to inspire new generations.
Following the visit, Gareth said: “I was honoured to visit Ysgol Frongoch and learn about their Thomas Maldwyn Pryce Inspiration Pupil of the Year Awards which gives recognition to promising young people.
“These awards are transforming lives by giving young people the boost they need to pursue their passion by giving them the recognition they deserve.
“This is an excellent and special way to continue Tom Pryce’s legacy to inspire and help the next generation race towards the future, and I’m proud to support this brilliant initiative and I’ll do all I can to help raise its profile.”
