Gwynedd waste collections to change over Christmas period

Residents urged to check revised dates as council extends recycling centre opening hours

GWYNEDD residents are being advised to check changes to waste and recycling collections over the Christmas period, as Cyngor Gwynedd confirms there will be no collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day this year.

Due to the festive holidays, no waste or recycling collections will take place on 25 and 26 December. Households affected by the changes have been notified directly by the council.

Residual waste collections, including green wheelie bins and black sacks, will be brought forward by a week for those usually collected on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. These collections will instead take place on 18 and 19 December.

Recycling collections missed on 25 and 26 December will resume the following week, with yellow bag collections also taking place then. Although Thursday, 1 January 2026 is a bank holiday, the council has confirmed that normal collections will go ahead on that day.

To help residents cope with increased amounts of waste and recycling over the festive period, the opening hours of Gwynedd’s recycling centres will be extended during the week beginning 29 December.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said residents should make use of the facilities provided.

“Although there’s a lot we can all do to reuse and cut down on unnecessary waste over Christmas, more litter and recycling tends to pile up in homes over this period,” he said.

“While some households are affected by the changes on 25 and 26 December, it’s important to remember that the council’s recycling centres are open over the Christmas and New Year period.

“The opening times of the centres have been extended, and we would encourage residents to make the most of these facilities if they have additional items for recycling or more waste than usual. All that’s needed is to book a slot at your local centre.”

Households that would normally have a collection on Christmas Day will instead be collected on Thursday, 18 December 2025, with the next collection on 15 January 2026. Those due a collection on Boxing Day will be collected on Thursday, 19 December 2025, with the next collection on 16 January 2026.

Recycling centres will be open from 9am to 12pm on Christmas Eve (24 December), before closing from 25 to 27 December. Centres will reopen on Monday, 29 December, operating from 8am to 4.30pm until 31 December. All sites will be closed on New Year’s Day, before reopening on 2 and 3 January. Normal opening hours resume from 5 January.

Residents can find full details of collection dates and recycling centre opening times on the Gwynedd app or by visiting the council’s recycling webpage. Those without internet access can contact the council on 01766 771000.

Bala and Blaenau Ffestiniog recycling centres are open on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays only.
