Newton House opens with improved accessibility

NEWTON HOUSE in Dinefwr Park, Llandeilo, has opened its doors to visitors this week complete with improved accessibility.

A new access lift has replaced the original lift in the house, alongside lighting to better illuminate the historic portraits in the dining room and engineered sound baffles in the café to reduce background noise for those with a hearing impairment.

The new lift will enable wheelchair users to access the first-floor exhibition spaces as well as playful spaces in the basement. The upgraded lift features a glass wall, showcasing the historic stonework of the house and recent careful conservation work to preserve it.

Meg Anthony, General Manager for Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion said: “We’re thrilled to have improved access to Newton House so everyone can enjoy these evolving spaces.

“Enabling everyone to visit our places is a crucial part of what we do. Thank you to the Welsh Government for helping us achieve this. It’s been no mean feat; the team have worked tirelessly to make this happen.

“Access has also been improved outdoors with a new easy access path through the centre of the deer-park, giving a beautiful view of the back of Newton House as well as a great vista on Dinefwr Castle.

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to enjoy Newton House throughout the year”.

Lighting to illuminate large portraits will allow visitors to see portraits in much more detail, showcasing the work of artists and telling important stories of Welsh history and culture.

The improved sound design in the cafe using innovative sound panels will help to soften echoes and background noise, ensuring the space is welcoming and enjoyable for all visitors.

This project was funded by support from the Welsh Government. Newton House has been under the care of the National Trust Cymru for over 30 years.

Visitors can visit the Newton House, café and garden daily from 10.30am – 4.30pm until November where the house is open on weekends only (normal admission applies, National Trust members enter for free). The parkland is open from dawn – dusk.
