FOLLOWING reports that Labour-run Caerphilly County Borough Council has spent more than £280,000 on a confidential pay-off for a former chief executive, the Welsh Conservatives have criticised the move, particularly at a time when public services such as libraries are facing cuts and families across Wales continue to struggle with the cost of living.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Local Government and Communities, Peter Fox MS said: “This is extremely concerning, particularly given this is the second time Caerphilly Council has been involved in a highly controversial severance payment for a senior official.
“Families across Wales are struggling with the cost of living, while council tax continues to rise and councils such as Caerphilly are looking to cut essential public services, including libraries. Taxpayers will rightly question these lottery-style payouts.
“Taxpayers deserve transparency, accountability and reassurance that public money is being spent responsibly. That is why I have written to the Plaid Cymru Cabinet Secretary seeking clarity.”
