A PORT TALBOT man’s determination to support families affected by childhood cancer will see him take on the Cologne Half Marathon this October in aid of LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity.
Dale Fischer, founder of Strength Beyond Silence, is running the German race in honour of Ava Grace, the daughter of his lifelong friend Ian Bird, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma – a rare eye cancer that affects young children.
Ava Grace was just one year old when she lost her eye as a result of the disease. Since her diagnosis, she has undergone extensive treatment, multiple surgeries and the fitting of prosthetic eyes, while continuing to face the emotional and physical challenges that come with her condition.
Fischer, who has known Bird since their teenage years, said he wanted to do something meaningful to recognise Ava’s courage and the support her family has received from LATCH.
“Many people see the diagnosis and surgeries, but they don’t always see the daily reality that follows,” he said. “The ongoing hospital appointments, prosthetic eye care, emotional support and adjustments to everyday life continue long after treatment ends.”
Bird has spoken highly of the support provided by LATCH, a Welsh charity that helps children receiving cancer treatment and their families. The organisation offers practical, emotional and financial assistance to families across Wales during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
The challenge also carries personal significance for Fischer. The last time he ran the Cologne Half Marathon was in 2016 alongside his mother. Returning to the event a decade later in 2026 is expected to be an emotional experience.
“It feels like the right run, at the right time, for the right cause,” he said. “I’ll be running in honour of Ava Grace, in memory of my mum, and to help LATCH continue supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer.”
More than £200 has already been raised through the fundraising campaign, with Fischer hoping to generate further support ahead of race day.
Donations can be made through his fundraising page, with all proceeds going to LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity to help continue its vital work supporting families across Wales.
