Community invited to help name new Welsh-medium school in Builth Wells

RESIDENTS are being invited to play a key role in shaping the identity of a new Welsh-medium all-age school in mid Powys, by suggesting a name.

Powys County Council will be opening the new school in Builth Wells, in September 2027, bringing together primary and secondary Welsh-medium education.

Preparations are well underway, with the temporary governing body holding its first meeting last week. As part of its role, it is now seeking suggestions from the local community to help decide on a name for the new school.

The council is encouraging anyone with an interest in its future success to submit ideas that reflect the area and the school’s all-age nature. Suggested names should be distinctive, and representative of the wide geographical area that will be served by the school.

Suggestions should also include a short explanation of the reasoning behind the proposed name. Submissions can be made online or via email, with a deadline of midday on Thursday, June 19.

To submit a suggestion:

Councillor James Gibson-Watt, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our communities to help shape the identity of a new Welsh-medium school that will serve learners for generations to come.

“The name of a school is incredibly important, it reflects its character, its community and its sense of place.

“We are keen to see a wide range of creative and meaningful suggestions that represent both Builth Wells and the wider area the school will serve. I would encourage everyone with an interest in Welsh-medium education in mid Powys to take part and have their say.”

Once the submission period closes, the temporary governing body will consider all suggestions and agree on a preferred name. The final decision will then be ratified by the Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys.

It is expected that the chosen name will be announced by the end of the school term, or as soon as possible afterwards.

The new school will play a central role in supporting and expanding Welsh-medium education in Powys, helping to strengthen the language and provide high-quality learning opportunities for children and young people across the middle part of the county.
