NEWPORT LIVE’S Aspire programme has celebrated another successful year with its Annual Record of Achievement event, held at The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre on Tuesday, June 9.
The event recognised the achievements of students within the Aspire programme which is Newport Live’s alternative education programme delivered in partnership with Newport City Council. More than 80 people attended this year’s celebration, which marked the end of two years of learning and development for young people.
Launched in 2023, Aspire provides engagement and educational opportunities for young people who may benefit from a different approach to mainstream education.
The programme began with three Newport secondary schools, Lliswerry High School, Llanwern High School, and The John Frost High School. It has since expanded to include a fourth, Newport High School.
Aspire offers a broad and practical curriculum, including GCSEs, BTEC-equivalent courses and work-based qualifications. The programme also focuses on developing personal, social and emotional skills through activities such as sport, cooking, life skills, outdoor education and enrichment experiences.
This year, students achieved a total of 230 qualifications, with Newport High students set to complete Year 11 from September. All 19 leavers have positive destinations secured, including Coleg Gwent and Military Preparation College.
Attendance across Aspire also improved by 46% this year.
Holly, Aspire Senior Youth Development Officer at Newport Live, said: “This year’s achievements are something everyone involved in Aspire should be incredibly proud of. A total of 230 qualifications were achieved across the schools, and all 19 of our leavers have a destination waiting for them.
“Aspire is not just about qualifications. It is a game-changer for young people in Newport, helping them build confidence, life skills and positive relationships with their peers and with our team.”
This year’s programme included a range of enrichment activities, including gorge walking and a celebratory trip to Kaspas. Some of the young people also pitched to Newport Live’s management team in a Dragon’s Den-style presentation to win a trip to Thorpe Park and were successful.
Steve Ward, Chief Executive at Newport Live, said: “Through the Aspire programme, Newport Live is proud to support a transformative educational partnership that is changing outcomes for young people.
“Aspire is not just an alternative; it is a valuable opportunity for young people to thrive academically and personally. We are proud to lead the programme on behalf of Newport City Council and remain committed to helping every young person build a brighter future.”
