More visitors will be able to enjoy Anglesey’s beaches this summer after the expansion of a beach wheelchair scheme at two popular coastal locations.
FOR the fourth year running, specially adapted beach wheelchairs will be available at Benllech and Llanddwyn, helping residents and visitors with mobility needs access the island’s coastline.
The Isle of Anglesey County Council has expanded the provision thanks to grant funding from Natural Resources Wales.
Designed for use on sand, the wheelchairs have large smooth tyres and a rugged frame, making it easier to travel across soft beach surfaces.
This summer, Benllech Beach will offer two adult beach wheelchairs and one child wheelchair, while Llanddwyn Beach will provide one adult and one child wheelchair.
The scheme is also supported by the council’s Maritime Service, with seasonal beach wardens helping visitors at beaches across the island.
Natural Resources Wales has also installed a moveable roll-out ‘Mobi-Mat’ at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest to improve access to the beach. The mat, made from recycled plastic, provides a firmer surface for users heading onto the sand.
Councillor Alun Roberts, Anglesey’s portfolio holder for Leisure, Tourism, Maritime and Property, said the scheme reflected the council’s priorities around wellbeing and inclusion.
He said: “By expanding beach wheelchair provision, we are helping more residents and visitors to access and enjoy Anglesey’s coastline safely and independently, and we are grateful to Natural Resources Wales and all partners involved in delivering this service.”
Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty warden Owen Davies said the coastline was one of the island’s most valued assets and it was important that as many people as possible could experience it.
He added: “Whether it’s Benllech or Llanddwyn, seeing visitors being able to get down onto the sand and enjoy the beach is really rewarding, and this service helps make that possible.”
Advance booking is essential for all users.
Due to demand and staffing capacity at Llanddwyn, visitors are being urged to book at least one week in advance.
