Rotary club raises £2,500 for Glangwili chemotherapy unit after successful sporting lunch

Fundraising event also delivers £2,500 boost for Prostate Cymru

CARMARTHEN Tywi Rotary Club has donated £2,500 to the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital following a fundraising event that also raised the same amount for Prostate Cymru.

The club, part of the global Rotary movement, raised a total of £5,000 through a sporting lunch held at Carmarthen Quins Rugby Club in February 2026.

The event attracted 140 guests and featured former Wales international and British & Irish Lion Colin Charvis as guest speaker, with broadcaster Brian Harries acting as master of ceremonies.

Club President Phillip Williams said supporting worthy causes was “in the Rotary blood” and explained why the two charities had been chosen.

He said: “The prostate cancer screening organised by Prostate Cymru has saved lives amongst members, family, friends and the wider community, not least because of the treatment and support provided by the dedicated team at the Glangwili Hospital Chemotherapy Unit.

“The event was a resounding success. £5,000 was raised, which exceeded all expectations, with half of the funds donated to Hywel Dda Health Charities and half to Prostate Cymru.”

Williams also thanked sponsors, guests and the team at Carmarthen Quins Rugby Club for helping make the event a success.

The £2,500 donation to Hywel Dda Health Charities will benefit the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital, helping improve facilities for patients receiving treatment.

Jessica Michael, Senior Sister at the unit, said: “On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital, I would like to thank Carmarthen Tywi Rotary Club for their support and fundraising resulting in a very generous donation of £2,500.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the environment and improve the way we care for patients within the Chemotherapy Day Unit. Please be assured that this money will go towards this improvement.”

Claire Rumble, Fundraising Officer for Hywel Dda Health Charities, said the donation would have a meaningful impact.

She said: “We are incredibly grateful to Carmarthen Tywi Rotary Club for their support. Their fundraising will make a real difference to patients receiving care at the Chemotherapy Day Unit.

“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide across the three counties of Hywel Dda, and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”

Hywel Dda Health Charities is the official charity supporting NHS services across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. More information about its work and how to support local NHS patients and staff is available via the charity’s website.
