PUPILS at Lift Anglesey are celebrating a strong result in this year’s year 1 phonics screening check, with 92% of pupils meeting the expected standard.
The result, compared with a national average of 80%, reflects the school’s strong focus on high-quality phonics teaching through the Read Write Inc. programme, taught consistently to help pupils build confident early reading skills from the start.
Staff carry out assessments every six weeks to check how pupils are getting on. This helps them quickly spot any gaps in learning and adjust phonics groups and support where needed.
Pupils who need extra help are identified early, with support put in place quickly to help them keep up and prevent gaps from widening.
Strong leadership and close collaboration between teachers and teaching assistants have also helped strengthen practice across the school, with high expectations for all pupils.
The school’s commitment to developing confident, enthusiastic readers is also reflected in its wider culture of reading, with pupils given regular opportunities to apply their phonics skills through carefully matched books and shared reading experiences at home and in school.
