A POPULAR Anglesey village known for its bottleneck congestion in the summer months is among a number of areas set for major travel improvements.
A transport scheme at Newborough will benefit from a “significant” cash boost from the Welsh Government.
It is all part of a nationwide £30m investment by the Welsh Government aimed at helping people get around more easily and to support local economies through better transport links.
Among the island’s projects to benefit are the Active Travel fund which will see core funding of £500,000 plus: £2.4 million for the Malltraeth to Newborough (phase 2) scheme.
The scheme is aimed at improving active travel routes between Pont Marquis, Malltraeth, and Newborough, and connecting the two settlements by extending the Lon Las Cefni network.
As part of the local transport fund £208,000 has been allocated for bus and infrastructure improvements.
Under the resilient roads fund, £200,000 will go to the A5 Pentre Berw and there is £200,000 for the Beaumaris (A545) route.
Further funds have also been allocated for road safety, with £421,068 for implementation of the 20mph speed limit.
There is also £133,750 for B5112 Trefor to Llannerch-y-Medd, £32,000 for theA5 Tyrpeg Nant near Llangefni to Rhostrehwfa, £21,576 for Kerbcraft pedestrian training, £11,040 for National Standards Cycle Training, £4,000 for Pass Plus driver training and £1,600 for Mature Driver training.
The ultra-low emission vehicles transformation fund has secured £166,600 to continue EV roll-out following appointment of supplier and under funds an unadopted road, £80,000 has been received for Ty’n Berllan Estate, at Bryngwran.
Welcoming the cash injection, an Isle of Anglesey County Council spokesperson said: “We’re pleased to have secured significant funding from the Welsh Government for several projects.
Together, these will improve highways infrastructure, create safe and sustainable links between local communities, offer further opportunities for active travel, and contribute towards a safer and more resilient transport network.
“In particular, the county council have been working in close collaboration with Natural Resources Wales and other members of the Glasffordd Steering Group to extend Lon Las Cefni from Cob Malltraeth into the village of Newborough.
“The project is currently at the detailed design stage, but we hope that it will encourage more sustainable modes of travel and assist in alleviating traffic congestion within Newborough.”
The Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates, said: “Connecting communities and delivering better transport for all is at the heart of this £30 million investment.

“We want to make it easier for people to travel to work, school, healthcare and to see friends and family, while also building a more sustainable transport network for future generations.
“These improvements will make real differences to everyday journeys – whether that’s safer routes, better paths for walking, wheeling and cycling, or more reliable bus services.
“We’re working with councils to ensure this money delivers the greatest benefits to communities across Wales.”
