PLAID CYMRU Senedd candidates for Sir Gaerfyrddin met with farming representatives to discuss the future of agriculture during a visit to a Carmarthenshire farm on Friday (Mar 27).
The meeting took place at Tyddyn farm near Llanwinio, where candidates Cefin Campbell, Nerys Evans, Adam Price and Mari Arthur held talks with Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) representatives, including Carmarthen branch chair Huw James and FUW President Ian Rickman.
Discussions focused on the key issues facing the agricultural sector ahead of the Senedd election on Thursday, May 7, including farm funding, bovine TB, bureaucracy and nitrate vulnerable zone (NVZ) regulations.
The Plaid Cymru candidates used the visit to outline their proposals for government, which include securing multi-year funding for farms, tackling TB, reviewing administrative burdens on farmers, and reforming NVZ rules.
Nerys Evans said: “It was important to hear directly from farmers about the challenges they are facing and their hopes for the future.
“We believe the countryside has been let down for too long, and a new direction is needed. Plaid Cymru’s proposals offer a practical and effective way to support family farms and the communities that rely on them.”
FUW Carmarthenshire chair Huw James said the visit provided an opportunity for an open and constructive discussion.
He said: “Farmers are facing significant uncertainty, from changes to support schemes to the ongoing impact of bovine TB. It is essential that future policies deliver stability, fairness and a clear long-term vision.
“Farming is at the heart of our rural economy and communities. Supporting the sector means supporting the people and culture that depend on it.”
