A PETITION raising fears that public toilets could close in a popular tourist attraction Ceredigion village was recently heard by senior councillors.
The call to keep the public toilets in Cenarth was brought to the September meeting of Ceredigion County Council’s Cabinet.
A change.org petition, Maintain Operation of Public Toilets in Cenarth Village, started by Nikki Hadlow, attracted 432 signatures, with a further paper petition gaining 1,384 supporters.
A letter to Ceredigion County Council accompanying the petition said it was understood there were no immediate plans to close the toilets of 2025/’26, there was uncertainty over their future, quoting a previous council response of: “At this stage, we are simply starting a conversation with the community about potential options for the future. Any changes would be subject to full discussion and agreement.”
The letter said: “Potential closure of the toilets has great knock-on effects for local businesses, as well as for the people who need to use the facilities. This includes in time (such as dealing with the public and additional cleaning of private facilities) and worryingly, in expenses – purchasing toilet rolls, hand washing and drying items, cleaning items etc. In addition, there are actual physical problems of having lots of people wishing to use the toilets of businesses, Including the number of people in a small shop or cafe – and very importantly, no disabled facilities (particularly important in an ageing population).”
It finished by calling on the county council to meet with the local community council, residents and businesses before any decision is made.
The change.org petition said: “Cenarth, home to cherished heritage sites and breathtaking natural beauty, often serves as a pit-stop for tourists and travellers on the main road to Carmarthen. Our public toilets have been of immense help to all, especially to visitors who come from far corners to experience our warm community life and mesmerising landscapes.
“The closure of these facilities would inconvenience thousands. According to Visit Wales, our village received many visitors last year, many of whom relied on the ready accessibility of these public facilities. Closing the toilets would certainly affect the quality of visits and potentially lessen our beloved village’s desirability as a beautiful sightseeing spot in Wales.
“Let’s ensure that Cenarth continues to be a welcoming place for one and all.”
Cabinet members noted receipt of the petition, with the relevant services considering its contents.
