BUTE ENERGY’S onshore wind energy park Waun Hesgog has received a strong show of support from residents and stakeholders.
When asked whether Wales should lead the development of onshore wind, 61% of respondents expressed neutral to positive views. Respondents praised the park’s contribution to clean energy, job creation, and its commitment to funding local initiatives.
One respondent commented, “Really, it’s the big things that will make a difference to the local area: more employment, more affordable homes, better transport links.”
The survey asked for residents’ views on onshore wind, proposals for Waun Hesgog Energy Park and the proposed £1.8 million annual community benefit fund. Many noted a need to improve transport infrastructure across the area, citing that public transport inland from the Ceredigion coast is almost impossible.
Over the lifetime of the project, Bute Energy’s Community Benefit Fund will total £72 million, with decisions on distribution made by a panel of residents. Local residents expressed support for investment opportunities in youth services, heritage preservation, and improved transport links, particularly the long-standing campaign to create a footpath between Ffwrnes and Eglwys Fach.

Community Investment and Communication Director Catryn Newton said: “We’re grateful to the community for taking the time to provide their feedback on our plans for Waun Hesgog Energy Park and for sharing their vision for the potential for clean energy to breathe fresh air into rural communities.
“The opportunity for Wales and communities like Talybont is clear. In the decade ahead, the planned investment in renewable energy could kickstart a thriving new industry backed by home-grown Welsh business and talent, powering resilient local communities.
“We need the same ambition and conviction from decision makers as we see from communities the length and breadth of Wales who can see the benefits of new clean energy for local communities, people, and for Wales.”
