Riders honour friend with charity memorial ride for chemotherapy unit

Fundraiser through the Rheidol Valley to celebrate life of much-loved horse rider Liz Hughes

FRIENDS from the Rheidol Riding Centre are set to saddle up in memory of a much-loved rider while raising money for local cancer services.

The memorial ride, taking place on Sunday, June 7, has been organised in honour of Liz Hughes, who sadly passed away from cancer in January 2025.

Liz was a familiar face within the riding community and was known for her love of horses, spending much of her time riding through the scenic Rheidol Valley with her horse, Betsi.

The event will raise funds for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Bronglais Hospital, which supported Liz during her illness.

Riders will set off from the Rheidol Riding Centre at 10:00am, with participants able to choose from three routes of varying lengths – six, eight or 14 miles – designed to suit all riding abilities.

Paige Denyer, Fundraising Support Officer, praised the efforts of Liz’s friends in organising the event.

She said: “We are incredibly grateful to the friends of Liz Hughes for organising such a meaningful event in Liz’s memory.

“The generous charitable donations we receive don’t replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, and research into, and the development of, treatments.”

Organisers hope the ride will not only celebrate Liz’s life and passion for riding, but also help support local patients receiving cancer treatment.

Those wishing to donate can do so via the Liz Hughes Memorial Ride fundraiser.
