Millions approved for next phase of Elan Valley Lakes Project

Funding boost to support visitor centre, tourism growth and low-carbon infrastructure

FURTHER funding worth millions of pounds has been approved to progress the next stage of the ambitious Elan Valley Lakes Project in Mid Wales.

The decision was confirmed by the Growing Mid Wales Board on May 19, allowing the project to move forward following completion of the required business case and assurance process.

Earlier this year, the project received £565,500 from the Mid Wales Growth Deal to support early delivery work, including plans for an expanded Celtic rainforest and the design of a new visitor centre.

Now, following the latest approval, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water will receive a further £3.81 million to continue delivery of the wider scheme, bringing total Growth Deal support for the project to £4.37 million.

The investment is being matched by a 50 per cent contribution from Dŵr Cymru, with funding ringfenced specifically for the approved capital project.

The Elan Valley Lakes Project aims to create a flagship visitor destination for Mid Wales by building on the area’s natural beauty, heritage and tourism appeal.

Planned improvements include expanded visitor facilities to help manage peak tourism demand, a new exhibition space and planetarium, upgraded café and viewing areas, improved accessibility and low-carbon infrastructure such as electric vehicle charging points.

Project leaders say the scheme is expected to boost year-round tourism, increase visitor spending and create jobs and apprenticeships while supporting Welsh Water’s journey towards net zero.

Bryan Davies and Jake Berriman, co-chairs of the Growing Mid Wales Board, said: “We’re pleased to see the Elan Valley Lakes Project progress into delivery.

“This investment reflects our shared ambition to unlock the potential of Mid Wales — supporting sustainable tourism, creating jobs and showcasing the region’s unique strengths.”

Kit Wilson said the investment marked “an important milestone” for both the Elan Valley and Mid Wales.

He added: “By expanding facilities, creating new educational and community spaces, improving accessibility and enhancing the overall visitor experience, the project will help ensure future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from this unique environment.”

Adam Price, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, said the Welsh Government remained committed to delivering economic prosperity and sustainable jobs across Wales.

Meanwhile, Anna McMorrin said the investment would help boost tourism businesses while creating jobs and opportunities for local communities.

The Mid Wales Growth Deal is backed by £110 million in combined Welsh and UK Government funding aimed at driving economic growth, infrastructure investment and long-term employment opportunities across the region.

Visitors to the Elan Valley can already access a café, gift shop, adventure playground and bike hire facilities, with further activities planned throughout the summer.
