THE REACTION of Ryan Swain, owner of RS Bespoke Joinery, Llansantffraid, after winning the Sole Trader Award, sponsored by The County Times, at this year’s prestigious Powys Business Awards held at The Hafren, Newtown last Friday was: “Winning this award is a huge honour not just for me personally, but as recognition of what’s possible when you combine skill, hard work and belief in your craft.”
Organised by Mid Wales Manufacturing Group, the awards showcase the diverse range of successful enterprises within Powys.
Ryan, who launched his woodworking business in 2021, said: “To be stood on stage in front of highly successful people is a huge achievement for me and amazing recognition
“I’m excited to find out what this award will do for the business and hopefully it will open doors as it continues to grow and innovate.
“This award shines a light on the value of trades in our rural economy and will hopefully inspire others who are building something from the ground up.”
With more than a decade of hands-on experience in traditional joinery and furniture making, he has built a reputation for excellence, precision and creativity.
RS Bespoke Joinery was founded to fill a gap in the local market for high-quality, made-to-measure timber products, created with care and craftsmanship.
Ryan added: “What sets RS Bespoke Joinery apart is not only the quality of the finished product, but the passion, persistence and problem-solving that goes into every job.”
Focused on quality, he uses a blend of traditional woodworking techniques and modern innovation when crafting shaker-style kitchen doors, fitted cabinetry or bespoke furniture.
By investing in the best tools, materials and state-of-the-art precision manufacturing he has launched new product lines which are sold online via Shopify. Custom shaker-style kitchen doors and CNC-machined timber goods are sold under the Carve Customs brand and designed for DIY renovations and sustainable home upgrades.
Ryan, who sources timber and materials locally whenever possible, explained: “This transition has allowed me to streamline production, increase profitability and better manage time which is essential for a sole trader.
“I’m proud to be part of a movement that champions craftsmanship in a world increasingly dominated by mass production.”
The award judges praised Ryan for enhancing his skills, building a custom website and using social media platforms to market his business and reach new customers.
They said: “With a robust order book spanning six months, this entrepreneur has a clear vision for future growth.
“Investment in advanced technology has boosted production efficiency and strengthened his financial position, setting a solid foundation for future expansion.”
