Care Inspectorate Wales report highlights progress in Powys Adult Services

POWYS County Council has welcomed the publication of a Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) assurance check of its Adult Services, which recognises strong leadership, effective partnerships and a dedicated workforce, while identifying areas where further improvement is needed.

The report highlights a number of strengths, including supportive leadership, strong safeguarding arrangements, meaningful engagement with people and carers, investment in staff development and effective partnership working with health and third-sector organisations. It also recognises that Adult Services are delivering services during a period of significant transformation and organisational change.

While acknowledging progress, CIW identified the need for greater consistency in frontline practice, including care planning, support for unpaid carers, advocacy, the Welsh language active offer, timeliness of assessments and reviews, and aspects of safeguarding and Mental Capacity Act practice.

Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys, said: “We welcome this report and are pleased that CIW has recognised the dedication of our staff, the strength of our partnerships and the progress being made across Adult Services.

“The findings show that we have strong foundations in place whilst providing clear guidance on areas where we need to improve. We fully accept and welcome those findings and are committed to delivering the changes needed.

“Many of the areas identified are already being addressed through our ambitious Adult Services Transformation Programme, which is focused on improving consistency, reducing delays and ensuring people receive high-quality, person-centred support wherever they live in Powys.

“As we continue to build a Stronger, Fairer, Greener Powys, we remain committed to ensuring residents receive high-quality care and support that helps them live independently, safely and well within their own home or community for as long as possible.”

The council will continue working with staff, partners, carers and people who use services to build on the strengths identified and drive further improvements across Adult Services.
