Powys Health Board to decide on future of temporary service changes

Decision on minor injury units and hospital services expected next week

POWYS Teaching Health Board will meet next Wednesday (July 30) to decide whether to continue with temporary changes to community hospital services and minor injury units across the county.

The board will consider a six-month evaluation of temporary service alterations that were introduced in December 2024. These include revised opening hours at minor injury units (MIUs) in Brecon and Llandrindod Wells, as well as the establishment of “Ready to Go Home” units in Llanidloes and Bronllys, and enhanced rehabilitation services in Brecon and Newtown.

The evaluation found that the changes had delivered a number of benefits — including improved reliability, better safety for patients and staff, lower staffing costs, and stronger patient outcomes.

If approved, the temporary measures will remain in place while the board continues its “Better Together” programme, which is reviewing the long-term future of adult physical and mental health services in Powys.

The original decision to introduce the changes was met with strong public reaction, but the board said at the time that failure to address serious challenges to service quality and sustainability would have posed significant risks.

Throughout 2025, the board has been conducting public engagement under the Better Together programme and plans a series of community events in the autumn to help shape future services.

The board meeting will be held in public and streamed online. Papers for the meeting, along with the livestream link, will be available via the board’s website: https://pthb.nhs.wales/about-us/the-board/board-meetings/

The final decision will be widely communicated to staff, local communities and the general public following the meeting.
