SEVEN candidates will be contesting Powys County Council’s Llandrindod Wells South ward by-election next month.

There are two independent candidates and all major parties apart from Labour are represented in the list that voters will be able to choose from when they go to the polls on Thursday, May 7.

The by-election is taking place following the shock resignation of Josie Ewing last month.

Ms Ewing had represented the ward as a Liberal Democrat following her election in May 2022.

On Thursday, March 19, Ms Ewing, took to social media to announce that she was resigning.

In her post on Facebook, Ms Ewing revealed frustration that residents and staff concerns were not being listened to or acted upon by the council.

Her resignation means the Liberal Democrats drop to 22 councillors and the coalition with Labour has 31 out of 67 councillors and one vacancy.

People who are not registered to vote still have time to get on the electoral roll.

The council said: “Applications to register to vote must reach the electoral registration officer by midnight on April 20, and can be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

“Electors should take note that applications to vote by post or requests to change or cancel an existing application must reach the electoral registration officer at County Hall by  5pm on April 21.

“Applications to vote by proxy must reach the Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on April 28.”

The candidates are:

John Ball – Reform UK

Janet Ruth Barker – Green Party

Mark Edward Burton – Conservative

Lauren D’Silva – Liberal Democrat

Thomas Owen Duggan – Plaid Cymru

Christopher Moore – Independent

Paul Smith – Independent
