Trefonen Hill Walk weekend set to return with packed programme of events

Community fundraiser to support Wales Air Ambulance and War Child UK

THE TREFONEN Hill Walk weekend is set to return next month, with organisers promising another action-packed few days of walking challenges and family activities in aid of two important charities.

The popular community event will take place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend from Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25, and is expected to attract around 1,000 participants across the four days.

Now running for more than 30 years, the Trefonen Hill Walk has raised thousands of pounds for both local and international causes. This year, the Hill Walk Committee has chosen to raise funds for Wales Air Ambulance and War Child UK.

It is the first time Wales Air Ambulance has been selected as a charity partner, after members of the local community previously required the lifesaving service.

A wide range of events are planned for all ages and abilities, including walks, a murder mystery night, hill run, duck race, quiz, motorcycle trial, family fun day and a talent show.

Dominic and Julie Cole, who are part of the Hill Walk Committee, said: “For the past couple of years we’ve liked a hill walk challenge.

“This year’s challenge is a 24-hour relay walk from Trefonen to the trig point at the Moelydd, which will see a team of people to walk continuously for 24 hours. We are inviting friends, families, individuals and groups to join in with the challenge!”

The weekend will begin on Friday with the Moelydd 24-hour relay walk, alongside a murder mystery night at Trefonen Village Hall.

On Saturday, May 23, the Across the Cynllath walk will take place, with participants able to choose either a 10-mile or 16-mile route, starting from Trefonen Village Hall. A motorbike trial will be held later in the afternoon at New Barns Farm, followed by a quiz night at the village hall.

Sunday, May 24 will feature the popular hill run, followed by a family afternoon including a duck race, rounders, orienteering, BBQ, bar, artisan market and a car meet.

The final day, Monday, May 25, will see the family walks take place, with a choice of a three-mile Curlew Walk or a six-mile Buzzard Walk, starting from Trefonen village. Refreshments will be available at New Barns Farm, and the weekend will conclude with the much-loved talent show at Trefonen Village Hall.

Wales Air Ambulance provides consultant-led emergency care, delivering hospital-level treatment directly to patients and transporting them to the most appropriate hospital when required. The charity relies on public donations to raise the £13 million needed annually to keep its helicopters and rapid response vehicles operating.

Kate Thomas, Regional Fundraising Manager for Wales Air Ambulance, thanked organisers for choosing the service.

“A huge thank you to the organisers for picking the Wales Air Ambulance as one of its charities to benefit from this wonderful fundraiser,” she said.

“The weekend is a fun filled weekend filled with lots to do for people of all ages. It is always a popular event and a huge success, which is credit to the organisers. It is one not to miss.

“Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise £13 million every year to keep our helicopters in the air and our rapid response vehicles on the road. Fundraisers, like this one, will help us reach that yearly target. Every pound raised over the weekend will help save lives across Wales.”
