RESIDENTS across Wales are facing growing financial pressure, with new research suggesting many would struggle to cover the cost of a loved one’s funeral, according to new data revealed by direct cremation provider Celebration of Life.
A nationwide survey of 8,000 people found that one in three households has less than £500 in savings, while one in 10 has no financial buffer at all.
With four in five people struggling to meet the cost of living, the ability to set aside money for emergencies is becoming increasingly difficult.
Specialising in simple, affordable send-offs, Celebration of Life has become a trusted choice for families across Britain looking to keep funeral costs under control and avoid unnecessary extras.
Built on years of reliable service, the company has grown steadily and is now recognised as a leading provider of direct cremation. Its approach offers a dignified and straightforward alternative, reflecting a wider change in how many people are choosing to mark the end of life.
The data revealed that younger people are particularly affected, with those aged 18 to 34 reporting savings below £2,000 on average.
Funeral costs can start at around £1,600 for a direct cremation and increase significantly depending on individual arrangements—posing a serious challenge for families already under financial strain.
Peter Shuttleworth, Head of Operations at Celebration of Life, said: “These figures reflect what many families are already experiencing across the UK, including in Wales.

“When someone dies, it’s not just an emotional shock—it can quickly become a financial one too.
“Without planning ahead, families can be left facing significant costs at very short notice.”
He added: “What we consistently hear from our customers is that once they’ve taken the time to explore their options — whether that’s requesting information or speaking to our team —any reservations they may have had are quickly alleviated.”
A Celebration of Life direct cremation is supported by an experienced and compassionate customer services team, offering help at a time when many families need it most.
