Storm Claudia to bring torrential rain and flood risk across Wales

Parts of Wales are braced for heavy downpours and potential flooding as Storm Claudia moves in, with the Met Office issuing severe weather warnings.

An amber warning for rain is in place across much of south and mid Wales until 23:59 GMT on Friday, with forecasters warning that these areas will face the worst of the conditions. A wider yellow warning also covers surrounding regions.

The warning comes just days after serious flooding in Carmarthen, which one local business owner described as the “worst in living memory.”

According to the Met Office, Storm Claudia could cause power cuts and disruptions to essential services, including gas, water and mobile networks. Flooding may lead to communities becoming temporarily cut off, while spray and surface water are likely to make driving hazardous. Motorists have been urged to take extra care, with some road closures and public transport delays or cancellations expected.

Forecasters also warned that fast-flowing or deep floodwater poses a danger to life. The situation could worsen later in the day as strong easterly winds and thunderstorms develop.

Areas under Friday’s amber warning include:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Caerphilly
  • Cardiff
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Newport
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Torfaen

Residents are being urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and to take precautions where possible as Storm Claudia continues to sweep across Wales.
