Amazon has announced plans to close its Newport delivery station, relocating operations to a new facility in Cardiff Bay by October 2025. The move will see staff transferred to a purpose-built site at ABP Business Park on Cargo Road, approximately 35 miles from the current location.
The Newport depot, situated at Celtic Business Park, has been operational since November 2016, initially employing 50 people. Amazon has assured employees that their positions are secure, provided they can commute to the new site. To facilitate this, the company will continue its free bus service, adjusting routes to serve the Cardiff location upon its opening.
A spokesperson for Amazon UK stated, “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers. As part of that effort, we are relocating our Newport delivery station to a new site in Cardiff. All employees will continue with their roles at the new delivery station, a bus service will continue, and there will be no changes to the service we provide to our customers in this area.”
While Amazon emphasises that customers will not experience service disruptions, some staff have voiced concerns over the increased commute. One Newport employee, speaking anonymously, remarked, “It helps that everyone still has their positions in the new Amazon depot, but the commuting distance has doubled, which is something I’m not happy with.”
The new Cardiff facility is described as a modern delivery station, offering enhanced amenities such as a canteen and improved locker rooms. This relocation aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to optimise its logistics network across the UK.
Amazon maintains a significant presence in Wales, with facilities including a large fulfilment centre in Swansea and a warehouse in Deeside.
