SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, backs funding for those who do not get paid for caring for someone.
Wrexham County Borough Council has announced that the short breaks funding scheme is now open to unpaid carers in Wrexham.
Mr Rowlands, who has often highlighted the role of unpaid carers in the Senedd, is urging those eligible to make sure they apply.
He said: “I welcome any moves to help unpaid carers who step in to help and receive little or no support.
“They save the NHS and taxpayers billions of pounds a year by providing this important care and I am always happy to highlight and raise awareness of the work they do.
“I believe it is absolutely vital that these carers do have the opportunity to take a short break and I am pleased to see these grants are available.
“I would urge anyone who supports someone who could not manage without your help to apply for the funding.”
The short breaks funding scheme is a grant designed to help carers recharge, reconnect and continue their caring role with renewed energy and wellbeing.
If you support someone who couldn’t manage without you – whether it is a family member, friend or neighbour, you may be an unpaid carer.
A short break could be anything that strengthens your caring relationship and supports your wellbeing. Whether that is time away, a new activity, or an item that brings joy. Examples include: overnight stays in hotels, caravans or holiday park; activities like yoga, walking groups or golf; day trips to theme parks, spa hotels or National Trust properties; group outings such as afternoon tea, river cruises or mountain biking and Items for hobbies, like musical instruments, gardening tools, or art materials.
Breaks can be taken alone, with other carers or with the person you care for and/or family members.
You may be eligible if you provide unpaid care for someone living in Wrexham; you are not receiving payment for your caring role or if you can demonstrate how the break will support your wellbeing and caring relationship.
