Liam Payne, the 31-year-old member of the globally successful British boyband One Direction, has tragically died after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. The incident occurred at the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo district of Argentina’s capital, where Payne was staying with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
According to local authorities, Payne suffered “extremely serious injuries” from the fall, which happened just after 5 pm local time. Medics confirmed his death at the scene. Alberto Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires’ state emergency medical system, said the singer fell into the hotel’s courtyard.
Emergency services responded to a call reporting an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol” at the hotel, though it remains unclear whether this was connected to Payne’s fatal fall. His body was transported from the scene by ambulance.

Holiday and Social Media Posts Before Death
Payne had been on holiday in Buenos Aires with Cassidy, and was active on social media in the days leading up to his death. Cassidy posted a TikTok video revealing she was travelling home from Argentina just two days before Payne was found dead. It is widely reported that Payne was also in the city to attend the concert of his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, with the pair spotted together at Horan’s show at the Movistar Arena two weeks earlier.

Tributes Pour In
Tributes from fans and fellow celebrities have poured in since news of Payne’s death broke. The X Factor, the show that launched Payne’s career, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media: “We are heartbroken by the sad passing of Liam Payne. He will leave a lasting legacy on the music industry.” Former X Factor host Dermot O’Leary expressed his sorrow, recalling Payne’s early talent: “The worst news. I remember him as a 14-year-old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing.”
Payne’s former bandmates and collaborators also paid tribute. Marvin Humes, former X Factor contestant and member of JLS, shared his memories of meeting Payne in 2008: “He was 14 years old… absolutely heartbroken by the tragic news.” Olly Murs described the news as “devastating,” adding, “I’m truly gutted and devastated for his family and of course his son Bear.” Payne’s son, Bear, was born in 2017, and he shared him with former Girls Aloud singer and The X Factor judge Cheryl.
Paris Hilton, media personality Rylan Clark, and other celebrities like Jedward also expressed their sadness, with Hilton calling the news “so upsetting” and offering condolences to his family and friends.
Career and Struggles
Liam Payne rose to fame as a teenager after auditioning for The X Factor in 2008. Although he was cut at the bootcamp stage, judge Simon Cowell urged him to return two years later. In 2010, Payne auditioned again, and while he didn’t make it through as a solo act, he was grouped with Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles to form One Direction. The band quickly became one of the world’s biggest boybands, releasing five albums and embarking on four world tours before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

Outside of One Direction, Payne launched a solo career, releasing his debut album LP1 in December 2019. He also co-wrote several of the band’s biggest hits, including History, Steal My Girl, and Story of My Life. Payne had been working on a second album and had officially returned to music in March 2024 with his single Teardrops.
In recent years, Payne had spoken openly about his struggles with alcoholism as One Direction’s fame skyrocketed, and he was hospitalised twice in 2023 with a kidney infection, forcing him to postpone his Latin American tour.
