Tom Hardy defends Barry Island in playful on-air clash with Radio X DJ

‘You can’t say that!’ Hollywood star hits back after ghost train jibe

Tom Hardy wasn’t having any of it when a cheeky dig was made at Barry Island during a lively interview on The Chris Moyles Show this week.

The Venom and Peaky Blinders star, currently doing the rounds promoting his latest Netflix thriller Havoc, found himself in a spirited back-and-forth with Radio X presenter Dominic Byrne on Monday morning (April 28). What started off as a light-hearted chat about the film quickly turned into a comically dry defence of the Welsh seaside town where parts of Havoc were filmed.

The conversation had been rolling along nicely, with Tom bantering about Dominic not being Chris Moyles and joking about the show itself. Things took a slight turn, though, when Dominic brought up Barry Island’s iconic ghost train – with a jab that didn’t quite land as intended.

Quipping that “the man running the ride was scarier than the attraction itself,” Dominic might have thought he was just having a laugh – but Hardy wasn’t letting it slide.

“You can’t say that,” the actor fired back, raising his eyebrows. “He might be listening.”

“That’s just a terrible thing to say about Barry Island, isn’t it?” he added, giving the presenter a mock-disapproving look.

Tom, who filmed in the Welsh seaside spot back in 2021, clearly has a soft spot for the place. He reminisced about family trips to the island during the shoot and even gave a nostalgic nod to one of its simpler pleasures.

“I went with my family, and there’s also the two penny machines. You know, the slidey machines?” he said, with a smile in his voice. “They’re very addictive.” Though, he did add with a laugh that they’re “best enjoyed in moderation.”

Directed by Wales’ own Gareth Evans, Havoc is set to land on Netflix soon, and Hardy has been full of praise for both the film and the filming locations. But if one thing’s clear – alongside his impressive acting chops – it’s that he’s ready to go to bat for Barry Island, ghost train and all.

After all, if Tom Hardy says it’s worth defending, who are we to argue?
