Fire breaks out at former Aberthaw Power Station

A LARGE fire has broken out at the former Aberthaw Power Station site in the Vale of Glamorgan.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed crews are at the scene of the blaze at the decommissioned power station near Barry.

Residents living nearby have been urged to keep windows and doors closed due to large amounts of smoke coming from the site.

The fire is understood to have started on Thursday morning (July 2), with smoke visible from some distance away in clear conditions.

The site is currently undergoing demolition as part of plans to redevelop the former coal-fired power station into a green energy and zero-carbon innovation hub.

CCR Energy, which is overseeing the redevelopment, said emergency procedures had been activated immediately and that the situation was being managed by emergency services and on-site response teams.

A spokesperson said the priority was “the safety of everyone involved”.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, and there are no confirmed reports of injuries at this stage.

The incident comes just weeks after the former power station’s landmark chimney stack was brought down in a controlled demolition.

Aberthaw was Wales’ last coal-fired power station and closed in 2020. The 500-acre site has since been earmarked for major redevelopment as part of Cardiff Capital Region’s clean energy plans.
