Footfall rises on Welsh high streets despite yearly decline

RETAIL experts at MRI Software report that footfall across Wales’ retail destinations rose by 2.3% in October compared to September, largely due to a significant 4.2% increase in high street visits. While shopping centres and retail parks saw only slight upticks of 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively, the data offers some optimism as retailers prepare for the Golden Quarter leading to Christmas.

Despite the recent gains, the overall footfall remains down by 4.6% compared to the same time last year, with retail parks facing the largest drop at 5.7%, followed by high streets at 4.7%, and shopping centres at 3.5%. This decline in foot traffic may partially be attributed to adverse weather, as October’s Storm Ashley affected many western parts of the UK, reminiscent of the impact of Storm Babet last year.

High street footfall also showed signs of stabilising in relation to the return-to-office trend. MRI Software’s data highlights that footfall on Thursdays and Fridays increased by 3.3% compared to 2023 levels, a possible indication that more workers are returning to office environments, particularly in urban areas.

Retailers in Wales remain hopeful that the approaching Black Friday will reverse the downward trend. According to MRI Software’s weekly ‘Insights from the Inside’ survey of over 700 store managers, 68% of retailers observed that customers had begun shopping for Christmas in October, and 66% remain optimistic that November’s footfall will surpass last year’s numbers. However, with consumer confidence dipping slightly in October amid concerns about the upcoming Autumn budget, spending may still be impacted.

Jenni Matthews, MRI Software’s Marketing and Insights Director, advised that “staying prepared is key for the critical months ahead.” She noted that retailers should leverage footfall data to manage staffing, operational needs, and lease negotiations, as weather disruptions and travel issues often complicate this time of year.

October 2024 Footfall Change Summary

  • Monthly: +2.3%
  • High Street: +4.2%
  • Retail Park: +0.2%

Yearly figures reflect ongoing challenges in the retail sector as stores brace for one of the busiest shopping periods, aiming to offset earlier declines with seasonal promotions and Black Friday events.
