Travelling abroad with a medical condition: things to consider

Getting the chance to travel abroad, whether it be through work, for a hen do, or a family holiday, is always exciting. However, for those living with medical conditions it’s not always simple or easy.

If you’re thinking of going abroad but are currently dealing with a medical condition, then there are some considerations you need to make prior to your trip. So, here are a few things to keep in mind when travelling with a health condition

Talk to your doctor

You should always consult with a doctor before you fly. This is especially true if you’re dealing with a more serious medical condition such as secondary liver cancer, heart disease, or severe asthma. They will confirm that you’re fit enough to travel safely and understand what accommodations you may require during your trip.

Some countries also require vaccinations and it’s important to check with your doctor that it’s safe for you to have them before you book your getaway.

Get comprehensive travel insurance

Insurance is crucial when planning a trip abroad, but it’s especially important if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Make sure you choose insurance that covers any and all medical conditions that you’ve been diagnosed with, and protects you in case you face a medical emergency while abroad.

Keep in mind that the cost of insurance can increase with certain health conditions, but it is worth it for peace of mind while you’re away.

Pack thoughtfully

If you require medications, ensure you have ordered enough to cover your trip and then some. You always want to take extras in the event that you get delayed coming home. If your medications need to be kept cool, you may want to purchase a cool bag for the journey and check that your accommodation has a fridge.

You may also want to carry a list of medications that you take and make a note of your doctor’s contact details as well as any emergency contacts. It’s better to be overprepared than find yourself in a sticky situation.

Preparation is key to enjoying a trip of a lifetime

Suffering from a medical condition doesn’t need to stop you from living your life. With the right planning and preparation, you can enjoy a stress-free holiday filled with laughter, excitement, and memories that you will hold onto for years to come.
