Joe Lock announced as new General Secretary of Welsh Labour

WELSH LABOUR is pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Lock as our new General Secretary.

Joe is an experienced organiser having worked on many elections, and began his organising career in Aberconwy. Joe has since campaigned all across Wales and was instrumental in Welsh Labour’s General Election success this year, which saw Wales return 27 Welsh Labour MPs and zero Welsh Conservative MPs.

Joe joined the Welsh Labour team in 2015, first as a Local Organiser, progressing to Regional Organiser, and has been the Deputy General Secretary for the last three years. Throughout the last decade, Joe has worked on many campaigns, including Senedd, council, PCC, and General Elections alike.

Joe took on the role of Acting General Secretary nine days before the snap 2024 General Election was called after the departure of the previous General Secretary, Jo McIntyre.

Welsh Labour Leader and First Minister Eluned Morgan said: “I’m delighted that Joe has been appointed General Secretary leading into the Senedd Election in 2026. Joe brings a wealth of knowledge and insight, having worked for the Party since 2015, most recently as Acting General Secretary for our successful General Election.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Joe and the Welsh Labour team as we focus on the issues that matter to Wales.”

Jo Stevens, Welsh Secretary, said: “Joe has strong, proven experience in winning elections. His hard work during the recent General Election helped earn Labour an important mandate in Wales. I look forward to continuing  to work with him as Welsh Labour General Secretary as we look to the 2026 Senedd election.”

Incoming Welsh Labour General Secretary Joe Lock said: “It is an honour to be appointed to this role at such an important time for Welsh Labour, and I sincerely look forward to working with Eluned Morgan, Jo Stevens, Carolyn Harris and all of our members, representatives and affiliates in Wales to make sure that the Welsh Labour continues to deliver for Wales.”
