Police investigating threats made against Mark Drakeford in relation to the new speed limit

Mark Drakeford

The First Minister has been the target of threats to his personal safety in response to Wales’ recent implementation of a 20mph speed limit.

Mark Drakeford informed the Senedd that he had received “abhorrent” messages and emphasised the importance of treating proponents of the reduced speed limit with respect.

Authorities have stated that they are currently investigating “reports of malicious communications” directed at the first minister. Wales made history as the first UK nation to lower the default speed limit in urban areas from 30mph to 20mph earlier this month. A petition calling for the repeal of the law has garnered over 430,000 signatures.

During the past week, Senedd Presiding Officer Elin Jones disclosed that politicians in Cardiff Bay, herself included, had been subjected to menacing messages regarding this matter.

Government officials assert that the policy’s objective is to save lives, decrease injuries, and promote walking and cycling. The implementation of this law, which was a part of the Welsh Labour manifesto, has sparked significant controversy.

Lee Waters, the minister responsible for introducing the new speed limit, will confront a vote of no confidence from the Conservative party on Wednesday, an event he is anticipated to win.

South Wales Police has stated that it is currently conducting an investigation into offensive messages directed at the first minister.
