Wales demonstrates green hydrogen leadership with U.S Congressional Staff delegation visit

Wales showcased its leadership in green hydrogen as Protium’s Pioneer 1 facility hosted a delegation of US Congressional staff on 11 October. Pioneer 1 is one of the first operational green hydrogen production facilities in the UK, providing the delegation a unique opportunity to see the technology in action.

Jon Constable, Protium’s Chief Asset and Engineering Officer said: “Protium and Pioneer 1 are driving Wales forward on the path to a sustainable, hydrogen-powered future, setting a high standard for innovation, collaboration, and environmental responsibility.

“Pioneer 1 demonstrates how hydrogen can be delivered in practice, supporting transport and other applications. Engaging with colleagues from around the world, and highlighting Wales’ efforts to build a hydrogen ecosystem, is a key part of driving the energy transition forward.”

A Welsh Government official said: “Hydrogen is a crucial part of the puzzle for Wales as we transition to clean energy and build a more sustainable future. It was great to host the US Congressional Staff delegation and see the progress that’s being made in this sector, with the Pioneer 1 hydrogen facility trailblazing and already providing hydrogen for Welsh industry and bus trials.”

The U.S. delegation, supported by the British Embassy Washington in collaboration with the Welsh Government, included representatives from the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, and covered a wide range of U.S. States from California and Alaska to Delaware and South Carolina. This visit underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing the green hydrogen agenda and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.

Wales continues to be at the forefront of sustainable energy initiatives, and Protium, Wales largest green hydrogen organisation, is supporting the country’s road map to Net Zero with a number of strategic projects including Pioneer 1 which is already powering Welsh business and hydrogen bus trials.
