A recap of the 2024-25 football season

From the Premier League to the Champions League, the 2024-25 football season was certainly one for the books. Competition was fierce across the board and notable performances from key players made last season an unforgettable watch from start to finish. So, let’s go through some of the 2024-25 season highlights, and take a quick look at what you can expect to see in the upcoming season.

The Premier League

Despite Jürgen Klopp’s departure and the side being widely predicted to come third, Liverpool managed to secure the title with a few weeks of the season left to spare. Liverpool’s forward, Mohamed Salah, was the tournament’s standout player, with an impressive 47 goal contributions throughout the competition.

Arsenal and Manchester City, who came in second and third place respectively, also gave us plenty of exciting matches throughout the competition but their lack of consistency cost them both a shot at the title.

UEFA Champions League

This year’s UEFA Champions League featured a new format, with 36 participating teams playing eight games each in the league phase of the competition. This increased the total number of matches played from 125 to 189.

The season delivered an unforgettable finale in Bavaria, with Paris Saint-Germain winning their first ever Champions League title, 5-0. Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain’s manager, ensured the team delivered a flawless performance in the final. During the match, Désiré Doué rose to the occasion, becoming the first teenager to score two goals in a Champions League final.

The runners up, Inter Milan, showed excellent consistency and strength throughout the tournament but ultimately fell short in the final, facing a crushing 5-0 defeat.

La Liga

This year it was Barcelona who claimed victory, marking their 28th title. Barcelona’s Brazilian forward Raphinha contributed hugely to the team’s success, putting in several exceptional performances throughout the competition.

Runners up, Real Madrid, led by Carlo Ancelotti, had an impressive squad who played some spellbinding football but ultimately failed to reclaim their title. It’s likely that all eyes will be on them ahead of the 2025-26 season. This is particularly the case because the squad has been overhauled and Ancelotti has now been replaced by Xabi Alonso.

What to expect in the 2025-26 season

The stakes are set to be even higher in the upcoming season, with more young talent emerging and competition heating up in all major leagues. So, if last season is anything to go by, fans can expect another unforgettable year of football, filled with drama, suspense, commiseration, and celebration. Whether you’re watching a football live stream or catching up on the weekend’s action, there are plenty of matches to keep an eye on over the coming months.
