CARMARTHEN GOLF CLUB recently managed to retain their Wales Ping Mixed Competition title.
As there are five rounds to the competition, the squad that represented Carmarthen were Julia Webb (Vice Captain), Sue Convery, Elin Jones, Alison Evans, Paula James, Edna Morris, Alan Price, Ed Wheeler, Gwenallt Jones, Richard Thomas, David Thomas,Eirian Evans and non-playing captain Stewart Evans.
Having already beaten Haverfordwest, Langland Bay, Milford Haven and Ashburnham, the final and semi-final were played at Cradoc GC and the club was represented by Alison Evans and Richard Thomas, Paula James and Alan Price and Edna Morris and Eirian Evans.
In the semi-final, they defeated Northop GC and Evans and Thomas won three and two and Morris and Evans lost three and two. When Alan Price and Paula James – the stars of this round – gave 16 shots and five down at the turn, it looked like their chances were over; however, with perseverance, they chipped away at the lead, winning the last two holes to bring it back to all square and finally won on the second extra hole.
In the final, Carmarthen faced a strong Radyr side. Evans and Thomas remained unbeaten with an excellent five andfour win and, with Price and James also winning three and one, the final match of Evans and Morris was called in. Carmarthen win 2½ – ½ and were crowned Ping Mixed Champions for the second time. They have now appeared in the finals four times in five years.
There was also success in the Wales Ladies Challenge Australian Spoons 18 hole Stableford Foursomes. The partners qualified from initial club competitions to the Southern Regionals at Creigiau GC. The final, played at Cradoc GC, was won by Edna and Ann Morris – the first time this trophy has been won by Carmarthen GC.
Back in Carmarthen, the seniors held their first competition of the autumn and, in a tight finish, the winner with 38 points was Hywel Morris, Ken Gealy came second with 37 points and Stuart Barclay was third with 36 points.
In the Ladies Section, the winner of the past Captains Cup was Jennifer Lewis with 36 points and runner up with 35 points was Ann Morris.
